What is the best food in Zagreb and Croatia?

Zagreb and Croatia are home to a rich and diverse culinary culture that draws from the country’s long history and its location at the crossroads of Central Europe and the Mediterranean. From hearty stews and grilled meats to sweet pastries and fresh seafood, there is something to satisfy every taste. Here are some of the most popular dishes in Zagreb and Croatia.

Pasticada

This slow-cooked beef stew is one of the most beloved dishes in Croatia and is especially popular in the region around Zagreb. The meat is marinated for several hours in a mixture of wine, vinegar, and spices before being cooked with onions, garlic, and a sweet and sour sauce. The final result is a tender and flavorful dish that is typically served with gnocchi.

Čevapi

This simple but satisfying dish consists of grilled sausages made from a mixture of beef and pork that are served in a soft flatbread with raw onions and a dollop of sour cream. Čevapi is a staple of Croatian cuisine and is popular throughout the country, especially as a quick and casual meal.

Black Risotto

This unique dish is made with cuttlefish that is simmered with onions, garlic, wine, and parsley to create a rich and flavorful broth. The cuttlefish is then combined with arborio rice to make a creamy and delicious risotto that is often served as a main course.

Strukli

This traditional pastry is a favorite among Croatians and is made from a soft and flaky dough that is filled with a mixture of cheese and sour cream. Strukli can be served sweet or savory and is typically boiled in water or milk until it is cooked through.

In addition to these traditional dishes, Zagreb and Croatia also offer a wide variety of international cuisine, including Italian, Asian, and Mediterranean-style. For example, Italian-style pizzerias and gelaterias are popular throughout the country, as are Asian-style noodle shops and sushi restaurants. And for those looking for a taste of the Mediterranean, many seafood restaurants in Zagreb and along the coast serve fresh and flavorful dishes made with the catch of the day.

Overall, the food in Zagreb and Croatia is characterized by its use of fresh and seasonal ingredients, its focus on hearty and comforting dishes, and its respect for traditional recipes and techniques. Whether you’re in the mood for a quick snack or a multi-course feast, there is something to satisfy every craving in this vibrant and delicious culinary culture.

Is there a way to watch Croatian Netflix outside Croatia?

Have you seen a great show on Croatian Netflix that you would like to keep on watching, even when abroad (that is, outside Croatia)? Are your kids watching a children series that they just want to watch, but they can’t, because you are abroad?

Earlier life was easy. When you traveled abroad you didn’t bring your TV with you, and it was obvious that you couldn’t watch your local TV stations when raging around in the big world. Today things are different. We have smart devices, smart TV plugins, meaning that you can easily access and watch your favorite streaming services all across the world. But, if you visit another country and open the Netflix application, you will quickly discover that the content you see is different. What has happened? You are watching the Netflix content available in your current nation, and not the Netflix content available in Croatia. What can you do to fix this?

Can I watch Netflix in Croatia?

Can I watch Croatian Netflix abroad?

No matter how much I would love to say yes, my current answer to the question is no! I have tested a whole lot of VPN providers, but no matter which one I have tested, the answer is no. There might be that the IPSX platform will be able to help you in the future, but besides that, I do not see any option or easy solution for those who want to watch Croatian Netflix abroad.

If you are an adult, you can still access Netflix and watch content with Croatian subtitles (or English subtitles), but if you want to have the actual content of Croatian Netflix or maybe some Croatian audio, you will most likely suffer as you travel abroad.

So, I guess you should bring a DVD with some local content instead if it is that important. A Croatian IP address might help you get access to and watch live streams of other Croatian TV channels, but it will not help you watch Croatian Netflix.

If you would rather watch content in some other Netflix region, you can visit netflix.fromabroad.org to find out how you can get access to American Netflix and other Netflix nations. But, that might not be exactly what you are looking for.

Do you know of any other solution or way to watch Croatian Netflix?

Can I watch Netflix in Croatia?

Are you coming to Croatia and are you worried about whether or not you will be able to watch Netflix? You will be able to watch Netflix, but just like a Croatian person abroad will get access to the Netflix content of that given country, you will only have access to the content available on Netflix in Croatia. That is for sure a smaller amount of content than you will find on Netflix in the USA (and other larger regions), but it is still packed with snacks, so you shouldn’t be bored.

But, do not forget – you have come to Zagreb and Croatia to do sightseeing, not sit inside in front of your display to watch Netflix!! 🙂

Listen to Lonely Planet – Come to Zagreb

Did you know that Zagreb was recently recommended as the number one place to visit in Europe in 2017 by Lonely Planet? It isn’t a lie!

Zagreb is the number one place in Europe to visit in 2017
Zagreb is the number one place in Europe to visit in 2017

Lonely Planet just published their “hotlist of European destinations you need to see in 2017.” On the top of the list you find the Croatian capital Zagreb, while the other nine cities on the list are:

  • Gotland, Sweden
  • Galicia, Spain
  • North-Montenegro
  • Leeds, Great Britain
  • Alentejo, Portugal
  • North-Germany
  • Moldova
  • Pafos, Cyprus
  • Le Havre, France

As you can see from the list, there are not the most famous destinations listed, but rather places that you are likely to have left on your “to-visit” list. Zagreb is a city blossoming, and it is getting more and more visitors dropping by every single year. It is not a coincidence that we have decided to create this Zagreb Guide either, after all the city is a real treat and you have a lot to look forward to as you plan your trip to Zagreb.

Would you like to see the full list? You can check the article in Lonely Planet!

What to do in Zagreb?

If you look for a city with famous landmarks and attractions, then you should probably visit Paris or Rome instead. Zagreb is not known for its attractions, but it has a fantastic atmosphere, great restaurants, tasty beer and a beautiful city in which you can walk around and enjoy life. Families will enjoy the zoo and some of the great parks, while those who are ready for an excursion should visit the Plitvice lakes (and lots of other places).

Check our list presenting what to do in Zagreb right here.

Congratulations to Zagreb, and hopefully we will see you soon in Zagreb!

Visit Samobor when in Zagreb

Are you looking for a place to go for a half-day trip while in Zagreb? There are lots of places to go and visit and you can read more about them on our activities page, but one place not mentioned there is Samobor. Maybe that could be the place for you?

Samobor is located only a short trip from Zagreb, and you can easily get there using a bus or going with car if you have one. The car trip takes about 30 minutes and it is quite easy to find a parking lot in the city. If you come with bus to Samobor you should be prepared for a 15 minute walk from the bus station to the center of Samobor.

Visit Samobor

Samobor is a small city with a very nice atmosphere. You might compare it to Szentendre (a city frequently visited by people who go to Budapest), but to be honest, Szentendre has much more to offer than Samobor.

Samobor is known for its special cake, a cream cake (made with egg-cream). It is a very tasty cake, and if you visit the city, this is something you should taste. Samobor might not have the most famous attractions, but it is a city that in itself is beautiful and with a great atmosphere. Here you can walk around on the main square, discover small street or enjoy the view as you climb the hills.

Is it a tragedy if I leave Zagreb without visiting Samobor?

Not at all! You then have an excuse to return some other time, and if you miss out on Samobor and never get to visit the place, you haven’t missed out on to much then either. There are much more important places to visit as you go to Croatia, and you should much rather visit the Plitvice lakes, or go to Ljubljana or something like that instead.

Maybe you read this and disagree with us completely? Feel free to write a comment and to share your thoughts. If you have questions related to Samobor, feel free to write them down as well!

Croatia vs Ukraine [World Cup 2018 qualifiers]

On March 24th Croatia will play against Ukraine in the World Cup 2018 qualifying. Both teams are part of Group I, a very hard group, and this is a very important match for both teams.

In Group I there are four top teams playing; Croatia, Ukraine, Turkey and Iceland, and the two “poorer” teams, Finland and Kosovo, are not easy opponents either. It is therefore no coincidence that lots of people consider this to be the hardest of all the qualification groups in Europe for the World Cup 2018 in Russia.

Before the upcoming leg Croatia and Ukraine are leading group I (with 10 and 8 points), and with a victory this will mean that Croatia will get a big advantage of 5 points to Ukraine. But, if this goes wrong, then Croatia will suddenly be behind Ukraine in points, and Iceland might stand next to Croatia with 10 points. You probably understand already why this will be such an interesting match, and why you should be there at the Maksimir stadium to watch the match.

Croatia vs Ukraine

Watch Croatia vs Ukraine

If you want to be there, then you will probably be able to buy tickets for the match around the stadium on the match day. But, if you can’t get a place on the stadium, then you can still watch the match on most sports pubs in Zagreb. If that ain’t an option for you either, then you can still stream the match on Fubo TV online. That is a brilliant platform where you can stream football online, including the Premier League, La Liga, Champions League and lots of other great stuff.

While in Zagreb to cheer for Croatia, we of course suggest that you walk around to enjoy the beauties of the city. Come a couple of hours early to the match and walk around in the Maksimir park to relax before the match starts. Afterwards you can return to the main square to celebrate the Croatian victory, take a look at the Zagreb Eye, and maybe eat a delicious pancake at Kava Tava?

There are lots of opportunities in Zagreb, and you can read more about them here in our Zagreb Guide!

Andre Rieu concert in Zagreb

Are you going to be in Zagreb on June 15th? Why not combine some city sightseeing with a magnificent Andre Rieu concert?

People who live in Western Europen often have little clue about the geographical location of Zagreb. If you say Zagreb, Ljubljana, Budapest, Graz and maybe include Vienna then they have little clue about how they are located compared to one another, and they have little clue about the distance between the cities. But, once we tell you that Andre Rieu will perform in Ljubljana on June 14th, in Zagreb on June 15th, in Budapest on June 16th and in Vienna on June 17th you probably understand that the distance cant be to big. And that is true!

If you go to Ljubljana for the Andre Rieu concert on June 14th you only have to drive your car for between 60-90 minutes to get to Zagreb for the concert on June 15th. And then to get to the Budapest concert with Andre Rieu on June 16th you will have to drive around three hours, and to get to Vienna on June 17th you will have to drive 2 1/2 hours.

Maybe you did not get a kick on Andre Rieu, but instead you feel like renting a car to discover these four cities. That is a brilliant idea, but if you are a fan of Andre Rieu then you can of course go to his concert in at least one of these cities.

Champions League matches in Zagreb this autumn

Dinamo Zagreb did it again, and for the second season in a row we can cheer for the team in Champions League. This autumn they will play against Juventus, Sevilla and Lyon, so we have lots of look forward to in Zagreb!

We all agree that group H in which Dinamo Zagreb will play their Champions League matches ain’t an easy group. Juventus is as always one of the best teams in Europe, Sevilla has won the Europe League three years in a row, and Lyon is one of the best teams in France after PSG. In other words, it will be tough for Dinamo Zagreb to do well in this group, but it for sure ain’t impossible.

Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League

Last year Dinamo Zagreb started their Champions League adventure with a win against Arsenal. This year they start by traveling to France and to Lyon to play their first match there on September 14th. Only thirteen days later the world will look to Zagreb however, because then Buffon and the stars in Juventus will come to play against Dinamo Zagreb. This is probably the most interesting of all the Champions League matches to be played in Zagreb this autumn, so make sure to get your ticket in order and be there to cheer for Dinamo Zagreb in this match.

Champions League schedule for Dinamo Zagreb

  • September 14th: Lyon vs Dinamo Zagreb
  • September 27th: Dinamo Zagreb vs Juventus
  • October 18th: Dinamo Zagreb vs Sevilla
  • November 2nd: Sevilla vs Dinamo Zagreb
  • November 22nd: Dinamo Zagreb vs Lyon
  • December 7th: Juventus vs Dinamo Zagreb

Last year Dinamo Zagreb did great in a very tough group, but unfortunately they still ended up last in their group. This year they will have a new chance and let us hope that they will perform better and at least end up third which will ensure them a spot in the Europe League play-off.

If you can’t come to Zagreb to cheer for Dinamo Zagreb, then you can still follow their matches online on different TV channels all around the world. The best way to watch all their matches online is at Fox Soccer 2 Go in the USA, and you can read more about watching those streams online right here.
